Differences between target and implanted intraocular lens (IOL) power in Ethiopian cataract outreach campaigns were evaluated, and machine learning (ML) was applied to optimize the IOL inventory and minimize avoidable refractive error. Patients from Ethiopian cataract campaigns with available target and implanted IOL records were identified, and the diopter difference between the two was measured. Gradient descent (an ML algorithm) was used to generate an optimal IOL inventory, and we measured the models performance across varying surplus levels.

Net cylinder and spherocylinder formats characterize individual keratometries and prescriptions but must be converted to dioptric vectors to allow for calculations and statistical analyses. N?ser's polar value system was specifically developed for the analysis of the surgically induced refractive change along the surgical meridian. This study provides a short description together with a practical manual and a computer program for the use of this dioptric vector method.

A new forceps-needle to facilitate intrascleral haptic fixation surgery is described. In an initial series of 10 cases, the forceps-needle was used to grasp and externalize the haptic of a 3-piece intraocular lens (IOL) for transscleral fixation. The site of perforation was marked at 180 degrees 2.0 mm away from the limbus. Then, the IOL with polypropylene haptics was folded and implanted partially into the anterior chamber.

A 59-year-old man with mild to moderate pigmentary glaucoma was referred for management of hypotony-related maculopathy 3 years after combined phacoemulsification and trabeculectomy in his right eye. His ocular history is significant for retinal detachment in the right eye that was surgically treated with a pars plana vitrectomy and scleral buckle 5 years prior to the current presentation and 1 year prior to his combined phacoemulsification–trabeculectomy procedure. After trabeculectomy, he reportedly had a wound leak with hypotony and choroidal effusion.
