For a bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, a doctor inserts a needle through the skin and into the bone. They use the needle and a syringe to collect a sample of bone marrow. Most of the time, they insert the needle into the back of the hip bone on 1 side, called the "posterior iliac crest" (arrows).
