Role of bile acids in primary biliary cholangitis

The immunologically mediated T cell attack on bile ducts in primary biliary cholangitis leads to the retention of bile acids. Bile acids eventually accumulate in high enough concentrations in the liver to cause chemical damage to hepatocytes.
