Recordings of flow, airway pressure (Paw), and transversus abdominis electromyography in a critically ill patient with COPD who is receiving pressure support of 20 cm H₂O. The onset of expiratory muscle activity (vertical dotted line) occurred when mechanical inflation was only partially completed, indicating that the patient was "fighting the ventilator".
