Minimizing placebo response is important in drug development. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to determine placebo response in trials for FD and to identify factors affecting placebo response rates.

Several observational studies have shown an association between statin use and lower incidence of liver cancer. However, several potential biases limit a causal interpretation that could lead to a recommendation of statin prescription to patients with cirrhosis in the absence of a cardiovascular indication. Ongoing randomized trials will soon provide a clearer picture on the efficacy and safety of statins for preventing liver cancer and other complications of cirrhosis.

The clinical management of chronic cough patients is challenging, and their response to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is considered as unsatisfactory. Few data concerning the association between impedance-pH variables and PPI response in these patients are available. Mean nocturnal baseline impedance (MNBI) and postreflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave (PSPW) index increase the diagnostic yield of impedance-pH in gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) is characterized by gastrinoma-induced hypergastrinemia causing excessive gastric acid secretion. Secretin stimulation tests (SSTs) are required for diagnosis in the majority of patients. Two case reports suggest that proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) cause false SST results. Consequently, PPIs are discontinued to allow hyperchlorhydria to recur; however, uncontrolled acidity can cause life-threatening complications in those with underlying undiagnosed ZES. The aim of this study was to determine whether PPIs influence the validity of SSTs for the diagnosis of ZES.

“Push” or “pull” techniques with the use of snares, forceps, baskets, and grasping devices are conventionally used to manage esophageal food bolus impaction (FBI). A novel cap-assisted technique has recently been advocated to reduce time taken for food bolus (FB) removal. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the cap-assisted technique against conventional methods of esophageal FB removal in a randomized controlled trial.

Obeticholic acid (OCA) and fibrates therapy results in biochemical improvement in placebo-controlled trials in patients with primary biliary cholangitis and insufficient response to ursodeoxycholic acid.
