Enhancing the implementation and sustainability of fundamental movement skill interventions in the UK and Ireland: lessons from collective intelligence engagement with stakeholders

Jiani Ma, Michael J. Hogan, Emma L. J. Eyre, Natalie Lander, Lisa M. Barnett & Michael J. Duncan

doi : 10.1186/s12966-021-01214-8

International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity volume 18, Article number: 144 (2021)

To have population-level impact, physical activity (PA) interventions must be effectively implemented and sustained under real-world conditions. Adequate Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) is integral to children being able to actively participate in play, games, and sports. Yet, few FMS interventions have been implemented at scale, nor sustained in routine practice, and thus it is important to understand the influences on sustained implementation. The study’s aim was to use Collective Intelligence (CI)—an applied systems science approach—with stakeholder groups to understand barriers to the implementation of FMS interventions, interdependencies between these barriers, and options to overcome the system of barriers identified.

Guiomar Masip, Ronja Foraita, Karri Silventoinen, Roger A. H. Adan, Wolfgang Ahrens, Stefaan De Henauw, Antje Hebestreit, Anna Keski-Rahkonen, Lauren Lissner, Kirsten Mehlig, Dénés Molnar, Luis A. Moreno, Iris Pigeot, Paola Russo, Toomas Veidebaum, Leonie H. Bogl & Jaakko Kaprio on behalf of the IDEFICS/I.Family Consortia

doi : 10.1186/s12966-021-01205-9

International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity volume 18, Article number: 139 (2021)

Many genes and molecular pathways are associated with obesity, but the mechanisms from genes to obesity are less well known. Eating behaviors represent a plausible pathway, but because the relationships of eating behaviors and obesity may be bi-directional, it remains challenging to resolve the underlying pathways. A longitudinal approach is needed to assess the contribution of genetic risk during the development of obesity in childhood. In this study we aim to examine the relationships between the polygenic risk score for body mass index (PRS-BMI), parental concern of overeating and obesity indices during childhood.

Understanding socioeconomic differences in metabolic syndrome remission among adults: what is the mediating role of health behaviors?

Liza A. Hoveling, Aart C. Liefbroer, Ute Bültmann & Nynke Smidt

doi : 10.1186/s12966-021-01217-5

International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity volume 18, Article number: 147 (2021)

Although the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) strongly varies based on individuals’ socioeconomic position (SEP), as yet no studies have examined the SEP-MetS remission relationship. Our aim is to longitudinally assess the associations between SEP measures education, income and occupational prestige, and MetS remission, and whether these associations are mediated by health behaviors, including physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake and diet quality.

The effectiveness of digital interventions for increasing physical activity in individuals of low socioeconomic status: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Max J. Western, Miranda E. G. Armstrong, Ishrat Islam, Kelly Morgan, Una F. Jones & Mark J. Kelson

doi : 10.1186/s12966-021-01218-4

International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity volume 18, Article number: 148 (2021)

Digital technologies such as wearables, websites and mobile applications are increasingly used in interventions targeting physical activity (PA). Increasing access to such technologies makes an attractive prospect for helping individuals of low socioeconomic status (SES) in becoming more active and healthier. However, little is known about their effectiveness in such populations. The aim of this systematic review was to explore whether digital interventions were effective in promoting PA in low SES populations, whether interventions are of equal benefit to higher SES individuals and whether the number or type of behaviour change techniques (BCTs) used in digital PA interventions was associated with intervention effects.

The longitudinal association between objectively measured physical activity and mental health among Norwegian adolescents

Ingeborg Barth Vedøy, Knut Ragnvald Skulberg, Sigmund Alfred Anderssen, Morten Wang Fagerland, Hege Eikeland Tjomsland & Miranda Thurston

doi : 10.1186/s12966-021-01211-x

International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity volume 18, Article number: 149 (2021)

Mental health among young people in many countries, including Norway, seems to be deteriorating. Physical activity (PA) has been positively associated with mental health. However, methodological issues related to study design and measurement of PA and mental health outcomes currently limits our understanding of the relationship. The purpose of the present study is to explore the prospective relationship between objectively measured PA and mental health outcomes. More specifically, volume (total PA), intensity (moderate-to-vigorous PA [MVPA]) and sedentary behaviour (SED) were explored in relation to mental health problems (MHP) and mental wellbeing (MWB).

Andrew Daly-Smith, Jade L. Morris, Emma Norris, Toni L. Williams, Victoria Archbold, Jouni Kallio, Tuija H. Tammelin, Amika Singh, Jorge Mota, Jesper von Seelen, Caterina Pesce, Jo Salmon, Heather McKay, John Bartholomew & Geir Kare Resaland

doi : 10.1186/s12966-021-01221-9

International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity volume 18, Article number: 151 (2021)

Physically active learning (PAL) - integration of movement within delivery of academic content - is a core component of many whole-of-school physical activity approaches. Yet, PAL intervention methods and strategies vary and frequently are not sustained beyond formal programmes. To improve PAL training, a more comprehensive understanding of the behavioural and psychological processes that influence teachers’ adoption and implementation of PAL is required. To address this, we conducted a meta-synthesis to synthesise key stakeholders’ knowledge of facilitators and barriers to teachers’ implementing PAL in schools to improve teacher-focussed PAL interventions in primary (elementary) schools.
