The ongoing U.S. opioid epidemic threatens quality of life and poses substantial economic and safety burdens to opioid abusers and their communities, physicians, and health-care systems. Public health experts have argued that prescription opioids are implicated in this epidemic; however, opioid dosing following surgical procedures remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between initial opioid prescribing following total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and the risk and quantity of long-term opioid use.

The synovial fluid test for alpha defensin has been reported to have an excellent performance in diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the lateral flow test for synovial fluid alpha defensin by using the methods of a formal diagnostic accuracy study and to compare its performance with that of the laboratory-based alpha defensin test for PJI.

Atypical femoral fracture (AFF) is associated with high prevalence rates of prodromal symptoms, bilateral involvement, complications, and the need for prophylactic fixation due to a risk of an impending fracture. Although most complete AFF cases have an asymptomatic contralateral femur at the initial presentation, there is lack of clarity on its progression. We evaluated the radiographic progression of asymptomatic contralateral femora in patients with a complete AFF and investigated the characteristics of these patients.

Preoperative mental health and depression have been shown to negatively impact patient-reported outcome measures after a broad array of orthopaedic procedures including total ankle arthroplasty. The hypothesis for this study was that decreased Short Form (SF)-36 Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores will modulate the impact of depression on patient-reported outcome measures after total ankle arthroplasty.

It is assumed that impingement between the ceramic liner and the stem increases the possibility of a liner fracture in total hip arthroplasty with a ceramic-on-ceramic bearing. The purpose of this study was to analyze the pattern of the impingement by evaluating the notches (U-shaped indented wear scars engraved on the stem) on radiographs to determine when and where impingement develops and to analyze the factors affecting its occurrence.

The apparently physiological kinematics of the bicruciate-stabilized total knee arthroplasty (BCS TKA) systems have been attributed to the anterior and posterior post-cam mechanism. Although comparisons between TKA designs with either a retained or a sacrificed cruciate ligament have been conducted, we are not aware of any analyses of 2 implants with identical bearing geometry but different cruciate-ligament strategies under equal loading conditions. Knowledge about the kinematic effect of the different cruciate ligament strategies would potentially be valuable to facilitate preoperative planning and decision-making with regard to selecting the most appropriate implant for a patient.

Tarsal coalitions are an important reason for foot pain in children. Early estimates placed the prevalence at up to 2%, while more recent data suggest that it is as high as 11% to 13%. To our knowledge, there have been no population-based studies to determine the true incidence of symptomatic tarsal coalitions in a pediatric population.

Extended trochanteric osteotomies (ETOs) provide wide femoral and acetabular exposure, give direct access to the femoral medullary canal, and facilitate implant removal and new implant placement during selected revision total hip arthroplasties (THAs). Previous studies are limited by modest patient numbers and limited length of follow-up. The goals of the current study were to assess the union rate, complications, and outcomes of contemporary ETOs performed during revision THAs.

Patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) thresholds for the EuroQol-5 Dimension-3 Level (EQ-5D-3L) questionnaire have been established for patients being evaluated 1 year following total hip arthroplasty (THA) but with varying derivation cohorts and methods. The aim of this study was to (1) generate an EQ-5D PASS threshold 1 year following THA on the basis of an international patient cohort, (2) validate preexisting and newly generated PASS thresholds 1 year following THA using the institutional registry of an academic care center, and (3) assess whether THA PASS thresholds vary by patient age and sex.

The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) Statement recommends that studies report results beyond p values and include treatment effect(s) and measures of precision (e.g., confidence intervals [CIs]) to facilitate the interpretation of results. The objective of this systematic review was to assess the reporting and interpretation of patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) results in clinical studies from high-impact orthopaedic journals, to determine the proportion of studies that (1) only reported a p value; (2) reported a treatment effect, CI, or minimal clinically important difference (MCID); and (3) offered an interpretation of the results beyond interpreting a p value.
