Biomarker research for Alzheimer's disease (AD) has grown rapidly in recent years, ensuing the integration of the AD fluid biomarker profile: A?1-42, t-tau, and p-tau181, into clinical and research criteria. However, current insights of AD arise almost exclusively from studies on white individuals.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The pathological hallmarks of AD are amyloid plaques [aggregates of amyloid beta (A)] and neurofibrillary tangles (aggregates of tau protein). Growing evidence suggests that tau accumulation is pathologically more relevant to the development of neurodegeneration and cognitive decline in AD patients than A plaques.

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-IgG-associated encephalomyelitis (MOG-EM) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders are challenging differential diagnoses of multiple sclerosis (MS). Hence, there is uncertainty, whether to test all MS patients for corresponding antibodies. Our objective was to provide a systematic study on the frequency of MOG and Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) autoantibodies in MS patients to evaluate a possible risk of misclassification.

Chronic progressive neuro-Behçet's disease (CPNBD) is characterized by slowly progressive cognitive decline, cerebellar ataxia, and brainstem atrophy without acute encephalomeningitis. To evaluate the progression of CPNBD during treatment, we conducted a retrospective, longitudinal comparative analysis of the clinical features and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with CPNBD.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by both motor and nonmotor deficits. Among cardinal symptoms of this disorder, tremor is the least responsive to dopamine replacement therapy and is often undertreated. Zuranolone (SAGE-217) is an investigational oral neuroactive steroid (NAS) gamma-aminobutyric acid A (GABAA) receptor–positive allosteric modulator (PAM) that has been investigated for its safety and efficacy in patients with PD.

The progressively disabling and terminal nature of ALS/MND imposes major coping demands on patients. We wished to improve the psychometric properties of our previously published MND-Coping Scale, so that parametric analyses were valid, and to make it simpler for patients to complete and clinicians to score.

Dementia is among the most frequent causes of institutionalization. To serve the purpose of preventive strategies, there are no follow-up studies that have evaluated the actual impact of post-stroke dementia on institutionalization. We therefore compared the institutionalization rate and length of stay in an institutional care facility of patients with post-stroke dementia with stroke patients without dementia.

The impact of perihematoma edema in Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH) on white matter integrity is uncertain. Fractional Anisotropy (FA), as measured with Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), can be used to assess white matter microstructure. We tested the hypotheses that sections of the Corticospinal Tract (CST) passing through perihematoma edema would 1) have low FA relative to the contralateral CST and 2) would predict NIHSS motor score in ICH patients.

The supplementary motor area (SMA) plays an important role in the initiation and coordination of internally and externally cued movements. Such movements include reaching, grasping, speaking, and bilateral hand coordination. While many studies discuss the SMA and its relationship to other parts of the motor network, there is minimal literature examining the connectivity of the SMA outside of the motor network. Using region-based fMRI studies, we built a neuroanatomical model to account for these extra-motor connections.

We evaluated the incidence, distribution, and histopathologic correlates of microvascular brain lesions in patients with severe COVID-19. Sixteen consecutive patients admitted to the intensive care unit with severe COVID-19 undergoing brain MRI for evaluation of coma or neurologic deficits were retrospectively identified. Eleven patients had punctate susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) lesions in the subcortical and deep white matter, eight patients had >10 SWI lesions, and four patients had lesions involving the corpus callosum.

We address the impact of the tropical environment on the human nervous system using the multifaceted approach characteristic of environmental neurology. First, environmental factors are examined according to their nature (physical, chemical and biological) and in relation to human activity and behavior. Some factors are specific to the tropics (climate and infections), while others are non-specific (chemicals, human communities and their way of life).

Ebolavirus disease (EVD) is a severe, highly contagious, and often fatal systemic disease in human and non-human primates. Zoonotic and human-to-human transmission have been well documented. Ebolaviruses are endemic to Equatorial and West Africa and there have been over 20 outbreaks in sub-Saharan Africa since 1976. The largest known outbreak of EVD occurred between 2013 and 2016 across several West African countries. It resulted in 28,646 suspected and confirmed cases and 11,323 deaths.

Onchocerciasis is a serious problem in tropical areas. The role of the parasite as a factor associated with neurological diseases needs to be addressed because it might involve a reduction of the risk via elimination strategies. We performed a systematic scoping review to identify available studies on this association and put into perspective the different methodological approaches for interpreting the evidence.
