Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) often report chronic back pain; however, there is inadequate research on psychological factors associated with pain in this patient population. Pain catastrophizing, a psychological factor that describes a pattern of negative thoughts and feelings about pain, has been associated with poorer responses to medical treatment for pain.

Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder involves loss of passive range of motion with associated pain and can develop spontaneously, with no obvious injury or inciting event. The pathomechanism of this disorder remains to be elucidated, but known risk factors for adhesive capsulitis include diabetes, female sex, and thyroid dysfunction. Additionally, transcriptional profiling and pedigree analyses have suggested a role for genetics.

While surgeons in low and middle-income countries have increasing experience with intramedullary nailing (IMN), external fixation (EF) continues to be commonly used for the management of open tibial fractures. We examined outcomes with extended follow-up of the participants enrolled in a clinical trial comparing these treatments.

Prior studies have demonstrated mitochondrial dysfunction in tendinopathy. The objective of this investigation was to explore the potential of SS-31 (elamipretide), a mitochondrial protectant, to improve mitochondrial function and promote tendon healing in a murine supraspinatus tendinopathy model.

Three-column osteotomies (3COs), usually in the form of pedicle subtraction or vertebral column resection, have become common in adult spinal deformity surgery. Although a powerful tool for deformity correction, 3COs can increase the risks of perioperative morbidity.

Although the exact etiology of patient dissatisfaction in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is unclear, the inflammatory response precipitated by surgery may be implicated. Robotic TKA has been shown to result in reduced bone and soft-tissue trauma.

Adjacent segment disease (ASD) following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with plating (ACDF-P) may yield a poor prognosis or reoperation. This review aimed to summarize risk factors for radiographic ASD (RASD) and clinical ASD (CASD) after ACDF-P.

AB There is increasing evidence that patient-reported outcomes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are associated with psychosocial factors and pain catastrophizing. Sleep disturbance, pain, and mental health have a complex interaction, which, if unrecognized, can be associated with impaired patient-reported outcomes and dissatisfaction following TKA.

AB Health-care expenses have been projected to increase from 17.7% of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) in 2014 to 19.6% in 2024. The unsustainable increase in health-care costs has contributed toward support for value-based health care (VBHC) reform.
