AB Background: Limiting the ability to engage in social interaction, aphasia increases the risk of poststroke depression and may prevent classical forms of psychotherapy. Our parallel-group, blinded-assessment, quasi-randomized controlled trial explores the feasibility and potential efficacy of intensive social interaction as a means to alleviate poststroke depression in subacute aphasia. Methods: We adopted a linguistically validated treatment program based on massed practice and conversational turn-taking (Intensive Language-Action Therapy).

AB Background: Hypertension is the most important modifiable stroke risk factor, but blood pressure (BP) remains poorly controlled after stroke, especially among Black and Hispanic patients. We tested the feasibility of TASC (Telehealth After Stroke Care), a post-acute stroke care model integrating nurse-supported home BP telemonitoring, tailored infographics, and multidisciplinary team video visits. Methods: Acute stroke patients with hypertension were randomized at discharge to usual care or usual care with TASC.

Leptomeningeal collateral status on baseline computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is associated with clinical outcome after acute ischemic stroke treatment. However, assessment of collateral status is not uniform. To compare 3 different CTA collateral scores (CS) and imaging techniques about their association with clinical outcome.

Reperfusion without functional independence (RFI) is an undesired outcome following thrombectomy in acute ischemic stroke. The primary objective was to evaluate, in patients presenting with proximal anterior circulation occlusion stroke in the extended time window, whether selection with computed tomography (CT) perfusion or magnetic resonance imaging is associated with RFI, mortality, or symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) compared with noncontrast CT selected patients.

The usefulness of prehospital scales for identifying anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (aLVO) in patients with suspected stroke may vary depending on the severity of their presentation. The performance of these scales across the spectrum of deficit severity is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of 8 prehospital scales for identifying aLVO across the spectrum of deficit severity.

Intravenous thrombolysis seems safe in acute ischemic stroke patients with saccular, unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs), but little is known about the differences in cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes between intravenous thrombolysis-treated stroke patients with and without UIAs. We hypothesized that UIA patients would have a higher burden of cardiovascular risk factors and, therefore, a higher risk of an unfavorable outcome.

Cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) is common in older people and causes lacunar stroke and vascular cognitive impairment. Risk factors include old age, hypertension and variants in the genes COL4A1/COL4A2 encoding collagen alpha-1(IV) and alpha-2(IV), here termed collagen-IV, which are core components of the basement membrane.

It has been reported that the S1P (sphingosine 1-phosphate) receptor modulator fingolimod reduces infarction in rodent models of stroke. Recent studies have suggested that circadian rhythms affect stroke and neuroprotection.

Studies using animal models have shown that cerebral hypoperfusion causes hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, leading to neuronal damage. However, the relationship between hypoperfusion and tau deposition in humans is unclear.

The immune response to acute cerebral ischemia is a major factor in stroke pathobiology. Circadian biology modulates some aspects of immune response. The goal of this study is to compare key parameters of immune response during the active/awake phase versus inactive/sleep phase in a mouse model of transient focal cerebral ischemia.

AB Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare, noninherited neurovascular disorder characterized by abnormal vasculature in the brain, skin, and eye. Patients with SWS characteristically have facial capillary malformation, also known as port-wine birthmark, a leptomeningeal vascular malformation seen on contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging images, abnormal blood vessels in the eye, and glaucoma.

AB Over the past 15 years, there have been significant advances in the treatment of acute and chronic medical consequences of stroke in childhood. Given high rates of survival in pediatric stroke, practitioners are tasked with treating the ongoing motor and neuropsychological sequelae in patients over the course of their development
