Diabetes and the COVID-19 pandemic

Kamlesh Khunti, Jonathan Valabhji & Shivani Misra

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05833-z

Almost immediately after the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus emerged, it was evident that people with chronic diseases, including diabetes, were disproportionately affected, with an increased risk of hospitalisation and mortality.

Global trends in the incidence of hospital admissions for diabetes-related foot disease and amputations: a review of national rates in the 21st century

Peter A. Lazzarini, Susanna M. Cramb, Jonathan Golledge, Jedidiah I. Morton, Dianna J. Magliano & Jaap J. Van Netten

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05845-9

Diabetic foot disease (DFD) is a leading cause of hospital admissions and amputations. Global trends in diabetes-related amputations have been previously reviewed, but trends in hospital admissions for multiple other DFD conditions have not.

MicroRNA biomarkers of type 2 diabetes: evidence synthesis from meta-analyses and pathway modelling

Hongmei Zhu & Siu-wai Leung

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05809-z

MicroRNAs are being sought as biomarkers for the early identification of type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to synthesise the evidence from microRNA–type 2 diabetes association studies and microRNA-regulated type 2 diabetes pathway delineation studies that met stringent quality criteria to identify and validate microRNAs of both statistical and biological significance as type 2 diabetes biomarkers.

The impact of population-level HbA1c screening on reducing diabetes diagnostic delay in middle-aged adults: a UK Biobank analysis

Katherine G. Young, Andrew P. McGovern, Inês Barroso, Andrew T. Hattersley, Angus G. Jones, Beverley M. Shields, Nicholas J. Thomas & John M. Dennis

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05824-0

Screening programmes can detect cases of undiagnosed diabetes earlier than symptomatic or incidental diagnosis. However, the improvement in time to diagnosis achieved by screening programmes compared with routine clinical care is unclear.

The relationship between islet autoantibody status and the genetic risk of type 1 diabetes in adult-onset type 1 diabetes

Nicholas J. Thomas, Helen C. Walkey, Akaal Kaur, Shivani Misra, Nick S. Oliver, Kevin Colclough, Michael N. Weedon, Desmond G. Johnston, Andrew T. Hattersley & Kashyap A. Patel

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05823-1

The reason for the observed lower rate of islet autoantibody positivity in clinician-diagnosed adult-onset vs childhood-onset type 1 diabetes is not known. We aimed to explore this by assessing the genetic risk of type 1 diabetes in autoantibody-negative and -positive children and adults.

Investigating the causal relationships between excess adiposity and cardiometabolic health in men and women

Pascal M. Mutie, Hugo Pomares-Milan, Naeimeh Atabaki-Pasdar, Daniel Coral, Hugo Fitipaldi, Neli Tsereteli, Juan Fernandez Tajes, Paul W. Franks & Giuseppe N. Giordano

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05811-5

Excess adiposity is differentially associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic disease in men and women, according to observational studies. Causal inference studies largely assume a linear relationship between BMI and cardiometabolic outcomes, which may not be the case.

Outdoor light at night in relation to glucose homoeostasis and diabetes in Chinese adults: a national and cross-sectional study of 98,658 participants from 162 study sites

Ruizhi Zheng, Zhuojun Xin, Mian Li, Tiange Wang, Min Xu, Jieli Lu, Meng Dai, Di Zhang, Yuhong Chen, Shuangyuan Wang, Hong Lin, Weiqing Wang, Guang Ning, Yufang Bi, Zhiyun Zhao & Yu Xu

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05819-x

Exposure to artificial light at night (LAN) disrupts the circadian timing system and might be a risk factor for diabetes. Our aim was to estimate the associations of chronic exposure to outdoor LAN with glucose homoeostasis markers and diabetes prevalence based on a national and cross-sectional survey of the general population in China.

The incidence of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes, time trends and association with the population composition in Sweden: a 40 year follow-up

Ingeborg Waernbaum, Torbjörn Lind, Anna Möllsten & Gisela Dahlquist

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05816-0

During the 1980s and 1990s, the incidence of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes more than doubled in Sweden, followed by a plateau. In the present 40 year follow-up, we investigated if the incidence remained stable and whether this could be explained by increased migration from countries reporting lower incidences.

Intra-islet insulin synthesis defects are associated with endoplasmic reticulum stress and loss of beta cell identity in human diabetes

Noemi Brusco, Guido Sebastiani, Gianfranco Di Giuseppe, Giada Licata, Giuseppina E. Grieco, Daniela Fignani, Laura Nigi, Caterina Formichi, Elena Aiello, Stefano Auddino, Giuseppe Quero, Chiara M. A. Cefalo, Francesca Cinti, Andrea Mari, Pietro M. Ferraro, Alfredo Pontecorvi, Sergio Alfieri, Andrea Giaccari, Francesco Dotta & Teresa Mezza

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05814-2

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and beta cell dedifferentiation both play leading roles in impaired insulin secretion in overt type 2 diabetes. Whether and how these factors are related in the natural history of the disease remains, however, unclear.

Importance of beta cell mass for glycaemic control in people with type 1 diabetes

Theodorus J. P. Jansen, Maarten Brom, Marti Boss, Mijke Buitinga, Cees J. Tack, Lian A. van Meijel, Bastiaan E. de Galan & Martin Gotthardt

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05830-2

The role of beta cell mass in the balance of glucose control and hypoglycaemic burden in people with type 1 diabetes is unclear. We applied positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with radiolabelled exendin to compare beta cell mass among people with type 1 diabetes and either low glucose variability (LGV) or high glucose variability (HGV).
