The anatomical relationship of the extrapedicular approach with the spinal nerve and its branches was researched in cadavers. Three types of extrapedicular paths were simulated: puncture inside the medial branch (MB), puncture outside the MB, and puncture outside the lateral branch (LB). At L1–L3, puncture outside the LB could avoid damage to these nerves.

The morphological features of the lateral atlantoaxial joints (LAJs) in patients with old type II odontoid fractures and atlantoaxial dislocation have not been fully analyzed. Our study found the changes in morphological features of the LAJs in some patients, and revealed the causes and consequences of the changes in morphological features of the LAJs.

Due to its complicated legal status, the effects of cannabis on elective spine surgery patients have not been well studied. In this nationwide analysis, we find that cannabis abuse is associated with higher perioperative thromboembolism and neurologic complications, respiratory complications, sepsis, length of stay, hospital charges, and rates of unfavorable discharge disposition.

This study evaluated incidence and risk factors associated with the development of facial pressure ulcers (FPU) in patients who underwent spine surgery in prone position. A total of 300 cases were studied. The incidence of FPU after prone spine surgery using head padded device >3 hours was 27.3%. Hypotension, higher temperature, prolonged operation time, and much crystalloid therapy were the independent risk factors

The incidence of spinal metastasis (SpM) is increasing, and life expectancy for patients with malignancy is also rising. The “elderly" represent a population with steady growth in SpM proportion. Bracing is associated with lower survival. We believe that surgery should be considered, regardless of the patient's age.

Most patients with neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS) have a history of trauma. Scar tissue formation within the scalene muscle and around the nerves after injury cause arm and hand symptoms. We report that supraclavicular scalenotomy followed by external neurolysis without rib resection is very effective as the surgical treatment.

The authors developed a mathematical model to the sagittal vertical axis (SVA) change in ankylosing spondylitis whom PSO is planned. The mathematical model was developed using trigonometric equations. No significant difference exists between postop SVA change amount and SVA calculated. The mathematical model is reliable in restoring the global sagittal balance.

Some of the improvements in DH, FH, and SLL achieved intraoperatively during lateral lumbar interbody fusion surgery were lost by the postoperative 1-week follow-up. An intraoperative radiograph can predict radiographic and clinical outcomes of the 2-year follow-up. The difference between preoperative DH and intraoperative DH should be >4.18 mm.

This study is a comprehensive narrative of all wrong-level spine surgeries and prevention strategies employed at our institution between 2008 and 2019, and aims to provide a roadmap for developing a rigorous prevention protocol. We systematically track root cause analyses and policy changes to determine which prevention strategies are most effective.
