Congenital malformations among offspring of women with type 1 diabetes who use insulin pumps: a prospective cohort study

Ida H. Thorius, Lise Lotte N. Husemoen, Rikke B. Nordsborg, Amra C. Alibegovic, Mari-Anne Gall, Janne Petersen & Elisabeth R. Mathiesen

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05864-6

Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion by insulin pump is often superior in improving glycaemic control compared with conventional multiple daily insulin injection (MDI). However, whether pump treatment leads to improved pregnancy outcomes in terms of congenital malformations and perinatal death remains unknown.

Skeletal muscle and intermuscular adipose tissue gene expression profiling identifies new biomarkers with prognostic significance for insulin resistance progression and intervention response

Dominik Lutter, Stephan Sachs, Marc Walter, Anna Kerege, Leigh Perreault, Darcy E. Kahn, Amare D. Wolide, Maximilian Kleinert, Bryan C. Bergman & Susanna M. Hofmann

doi : 10.1007/s00125-023-05874-y

Although insulin resistance often leads to type 2 diabetes mellitus, its early stages are often unrecognised, thus reducing the probability of successful prevention and intervention. Moreover, treatment efficacy is affected by the genetics of the individual. We used gene expression profiles from a cross-sectional study to identify potential candidate genes for the prediction of diabetes risk and intervention response.

Determination of autoantibodies in type 2 diabetes: one simple way to improve classification

Johnny Ludvigsson

doi : 10.1007/s00125-022-05858-4

This letter aims to increase interest in better classification of type 2 diabetes. This can be done in a simple and cheap way via determination of autoantibodies. Autoantibody analysis can be used to detect the 7–12% of people with diabetes that is phenotypic of type 2 diabetes but is, in fact, latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), which may be regarded as a variant of type 1 diabetes.
