Periodontal risk score: Initiation and model validation for 6,762 teeth

Muhammad H. A. Saleh, Mustafa Tattan, Giuseppe Troiano, Himabindu Dukka, Andrea Ravidà, Robert Levine, Hom-Lay Wang, Preston D. Miller

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0273

Tooth-level prognostic systems are valuable tools for treatment planning and risk assessment of periodontally involved teeth. Recently the Miller‒McEntire prognosis index was found to outperform comparable systems. However, it had some limitations. The present study aimed to develop and evaluate the prognostic performance of a modified version that addresses most limitations of the previous model called the periodontal risk score (PRS).

Devin L. Christiansen, Amy C. Killeen, Amanda Ramer-Tait, Robin L. Hattervig, Ali Nawshad, Kristen Beede, Kaeli K. Samson, Richard A. Reinhardt

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0297

The objective of this exploratory study was to evaluate inflammatory markers in periodontal maintenance patients from a randomized, double-masked, parallel intervention clinical trial comparing local simvastatin (SIM) to carrier alone following mini-flap access.

Association between subclinical atherosclerosis and oral inflammation: A cross-sectional study

Piero Papi, Nicola Pranno, Bianca Di Murro, Giorgio Pompa, Antonella Polimeni, Claudio Letizia, Luigi Petramala, Antonio Concistrè, Eva Muñoz Aguilera, Marco Orlandi, Francesco D'Aiuto

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0026

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the association between carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT) values and periodontal and peri-implant diseases in a sample of patients with hypertension.

Effect of maternal true combined endodontic-periodontal lesion on insulin and inflammatory pathway in adult offspring

Bianca Elvira Belardi, Maria Sara de Lima Coutinho Mattera, Thaís Verônica Saori Tsosura, Rodrigo Martins dos Santos, Cristiane Cantiga-Silva, Luciano Tavares Ângelo Cintra, Fernando Yamamoto Chiba, Lara Teschi Bravo, Nubia Ramos Carvalho, Ana Carolina Nascimento Carnevali, Renan Akira Fujii de Oliveira, Edilson Ervolino, Doris Hissako Matsushita

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0139

Maternal periodontal disease (PED) and apical periodontitis (AP) are associated insulin resistance (IR), increased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels, and alterations in insulin signaling (IS) in the gastrocnemius muscle (GM) of adult offspring. TNF-α stimulates I kappa B kinase (IKK) and c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase (JNK), resulting in IS attenuation.

Microbiological effects of amoxicillin plus metronidazole in the treatment of young patients with Stages III and IV periodontitis: A secondary analysis from a 1-year double-blinded placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial

Marcelo Faveri, Belen Retamal-Valdes, Maria Josefa Mestnik, Luciene Cristina de Figueiredo, Valentim Adelino Ricardo Barão, João Gabriel Silva Souza, Poliana Mendes Duarte, Magda Feres

doi : 10.1002/JPER.21-0171

Despite the body of evidence supporting the clinical benefits of metronidazole (MTZ) and amoxicillin (AMX) in the treatment of young patients with periodontitis, the microbiological outcomes of this antibiotic protocol have been less explored. This study evaluated the microbiological effects of adjunctive MTZ+AMX in the treatment of young patients with periodontitis.

Better living through chemistry? A randomized, double-blind controlled study evaluating the efficacy of plaque control and gingival health impacts of a novel stannous fluoride-containing gel

Thair Takesh, Arezou Goshtasbi, Kairong Lin, Susan Meishan Yang, Cherie Wink, Maria L. Geisinger, Petra Wilder-Smith

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0254

Cyanoacrylate and hyaluronic acid combination on palatal donor site management after de-epithelialized graft harvesting

Hanife Merva Parlak, Murat Haktan Durmaz, Havanur Bayrak, Birtan Tolga Yilmaz, H. Gencay Keceli

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0409

Although soft tissue substitutes showed promising improvement in the past decade, epithelialized gingival graft (EGG) is still widely used in periodontal plastic surgery applications. Donor site management after EGG harvesting has been challenging for clinicians. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of cyanoacrylate, hyaluronic acid, and their combination in palatal donor site management after EGG harvesting.

Assessing the effect of antihypertensives on plaque microbiota in patients with periodontitis and hypertension using 16S rRNA sequencing: A cross-sectional study

Hyun-Joo Kim, Kyu-Won Shim, Hee Sam Na, Si Yeong Kim, Yeuni Yu, Yuri Song, Hyun Ah Lee, Ju Youn Lee, Jae-Hyung Lee, Jin Chung

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0204

Periodontitis is initiated or accelerated by dysbiosis of oral microorganisms. When hypertension is accompanied in periodontitis patients, changes of oral microbiota occur. Since there are no reports on antihypertensives, we assessed their effect on the oral microbial profiles of patients with periodontitis.

D-mannose alleviated alveolar bone loss in mice with experimental periodontitis via regulating the anti-inflammatory effect of amino acids

Hua Yang, Nannan Han, Zhenhua Luo, Junji Xu, Lijia Guo, Yi Liu

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0294

Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease caused by dysbiosis of oral microbiota, ultimately leading to periodontal alveolar bone loss. The oral subgingival microbiome, a key role in periodontitis pathogenesis, could alter the composition of gut microbiomes resulting in intestinal microbiota disorder.

Profiling of bile acids and activated receptor S1PR2 in gingival tissues of periodontitis patients

Ruhan Yang, Weijun Yu, Lu Lin, Min Jin, Shucheng Hu, Bin Jiang, Chuanyuan Mao, Guanglong Li, Jiaqi Tang, Yuting Gu, Hui Chen, Eryi Lu

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0398

Bile acids, as a group of cholesterol metabolites, play important roles in inflammation and bone metabolism. However, the possible link between bile acids and periodontitis is still unclear. This study aimed to clarify the alterations of the bile acid profile and corresponding receptor expression levels in periodontitis patients, and evaluate their association with periodontitis severity.

Spent culture supernatant of Streptococcus gordonii mitigates inflammation of human periodontal cells and inhibits proliferation of pathogenic oral microbes

Yi Shu, Chawin Upara, Qiong Ding, Min Zhu, Erliang Zeng, Jeffrey A. Banas, Liu Hong

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0333

The oral commensal bacterial species Streptococcus gordonii has been reported to regulate the inflammation of oral epithelial cells stimulated by the periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis. This study investigated the activities of S. gordonii metabolites in S. gordonii spent culture supernatants (Sg-SCS) on periodontal-related bacterial growth and periodontitis-associated inflammatory cytokines.
