The association between brain injury after cardiac arrest and poor survival outcomes has led to longstanding pessimism. However, the publicly witnessed cardiac arrest, resuscitation, and acute management of Mr. Damar Hamlin and his favorable neurologic recovery provides some optimism.

The integrity of cortical motor networks and their descending effector pathway (the corticospinal tract [CST]) is a major determinant motor recovery after stroke. However, this view neglects the importance of ascending tracts and their modulatory effects on cortical physiology. Here, we explore the role of such a tract that connects dopaminergic ventral tegmental midbrain nuclei to the motor cortex (the VTMC tract) for post-stroke recovery.

Time from stroke onset to reperfusion (TSOR) is strongly associated with outcomes after endovascular treatment. A near-to-complete or complete reperfusion (modified Treatment in Cerebral Ischemia [mTICI] 2c–3) is associated with improved outcomes compared with a successful reperfusion (mTICI 2b).

Lower global disability and higher quality of life among ischemic stroke patients was found to be associated with the dispatch of mobile stroke units (MSUs) among patients eligible for recanalizing treatments in the Berlin_Prehospital Or Usual Delivery of stroke care (B_PROUD) study. The current study assessed the cost-utility and cost-effectiveness of additional MSU dispatch using data from this prospective, controlled, intervention study.

For decades, it has been suggested that small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) may be particularly atherogenic. High levels of sdLDL are associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease; however, the association of sdLDL with ischemic stroke has not been explored in a large prospective study on the general population.

Although growing evidence suggests that perivascular space (PVS) serves as a clearance route for amyloid and tau, the association between enlarged PVS (EPVS) and Alzheimer disease is highly inconsistent across studies. As the conventional visual rating systems for EPVS were insufficient to predict amyloid/tau/neurodegeneration (A/T/N) status, we developed a new rating scale for EPVS located in the temporal lobe (T-EPVS).

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is markedly altered in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and its reduction in older populations is associated with AD risk. However, little is known about the underlying brain mechanisms. Our objective was to investigate the relationships between REM sleep integrity and amyloid deposition, gray matter volume, and perfusion in aging.

Structural imaging of the cholinergic basal forebrain may provide a biomarker for cholinergic system integrity that can be used in motor and non-motor outcome studies in Parkinson's disease. However, no prior studies have validated these structural metrics with cholinergic nerve terminal in vivo imaging in Parkinson's disease. Here, we correlate cholinergic basal forebrain morphometry with the topography of vesicular acetylcholine transporter in a large Parkinson's sample.

In neurodegenerative diseases, the characterization of the prodromal phase is essential for the future application of disease-modifying therapies. X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism is a hereditary neurodegenerative movement disorder characterized by severe adult-onset dystonia accompanied by parkinsonism.

Identification of genetic risk factors for Parkinson disease (PD) has to date been primarily limited to the study of single nucleotide variants, which only represent a small fraction of the genetic variation in the human genome. Consequently, causal variants for most PD risk are not known. Here we focused on structural variants (SVs), which represent a major source of genetic variation in the human genome.

Bradykinesia is the major cardinal motor sign of Parkinson disease (PD), but its neural underpinnings are unclear. The goal of this study was to examine whether changes in bradykinesia following long-term subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) are linked to local STN beta (13–30 Hz) dynamics or a wider bilateral network dysfunction.
