Evaluating pain behaviours: Widely used mechanical and thermal methods in rodents

Akshat D. Modi a,b,*, Anavi Parekh c, Yajan N. Pancholi

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114417

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114417

Globally, over 300 million surgical procedures are performed annually, with pain being one of the most common post-operative side effects. During the onset of injury, acute pain plays a protective role in alerting the individual to remove noxious stimuli, while long-lasting chronic pain without any physiological reason is detrimental to the recovery process.

The effect of intraperitoneal and intra-RMTg infusions of CTAP on rats’ social interaction

Xuhong Li a,b,1, Jing Wu a,c, Xinwang Li a,*,2, Jianjun Zhang

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114333

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114333

Social interaction is necessary for the development of individuals and society. Social interaction behaviors are rewarding. Similar to exogenous opioids, social interaction behaviors are able to induce rewarding effects that are regulated by the endogenous opioid system as well.

Roles of prokineticin 2 in electroconvulsive shock-induced memory impairment via regulation of phenotype polarization in astrocytes

Lihao Chen , Feng Lv , Su Min *,1, You Yang , Di Liu

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114350

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114350

Electroconvulsive shock (ECT) is the most effective treatment for depression but can impair learning and memory. ECT is increasingly being shown to activate astrocytes and induce neuroinflammation, resulting in cognitive decline.

The alteration of gut microbiota in venlafaxine-ameliorated chronic unpredictable mild stress-induced depression in mice

Wei Shen 1, Yanlin Tao 1, Fang Zheng , Houyuan Zhou , Hui Wu , Hailian Shi , Fei Huang *, Xiaojun Wu

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114399

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114399

Depression is associated with intestinal dysbiosis. Venlafaxine is a commonly used antidepressant in clinical practice as a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor. However, its effects on gut bacteria in depression remain unclear.

Empathic concern induction modulates behavioral ratings and neural responses to harm-related moral judgment: An event-related potentials study

Yunyun Huang a,*, Ping Hu b, Huan Deng

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114397

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114397

Although empathic concern is critical in harm-related moral judgment, the temporal dynamics underlying the impact of empathic concern on moral judgment remain unclear. This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate how empathic concern induction shaped the way individuals perceive harmful/helpful behaviors.

Pausing and reorienting behaviors enhance the performance of a spatial working memory task

Allison E. George a,1, John J. Stout a, Amy L. Griffin

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114410

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114410

During spatial working memory tasks, animals need to retain information about a previous trial in order to successfully select their next trajectory.

Sphingosine 1 phosphate lyase inhibition rescues cognition in diabetic mice by promoting anti-inflammatory microglia

Anika Sood 1, Valencia Fernandes 2, Kumari Preeti 3, Dharmendra Kumar Khatri *,4, Shashi Bala Singh

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114415

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114415

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is emerging as a crucial sphingolipid modulating neuroinflammation and cognition. S1P levels in the brain have been found to be decreased in cognitive impairment. S1P lyase (S1PL) is the key enzyme in metabolizing S1P and has been implicated in neuroinflammation.

Kratom (M. speciosa) exposure during adolescence caused long-lasting cognitive behavioural deficits associated with perturbated brain metabolism pathways in adult rats

Farah Wahida Suhaimi a,*, Aiman Nadhirah Zul Aznal a, Nurul Aqmar Mohamad Nor Hazalin b, Lay Kek Teh b, Zurina Hassan a, Mohd Zaki Salleh

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114411

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114411

Kratom (M. speciosa Korth) is an herbal plant native to Southeast Asia. The leaves have been widely used to alleviate pain and opioid withdrawal symptoms. However, the increasing trend of recreational use of kratom among youth is concerning because substance abuse may render the adolescent brain more susceptible to neuropathological processes, causing dramatic consequences that persist into adulthood.

Repeated neonatal isoflurane exposure facilitated stress-related fear extinction impairment in male mice and was associated with ΔFosB accumulation in the basolateral amygdala and the hippocampal dentate gyrus

JiaLing Zhong a,b, ChunLing Li a,b, LuoFang Peng a,c,*, Yundan Pan a,b, Yong Yang a,b, QuLian Guo a,b, Tao Zhong

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114416

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114416

Volatile anesthetics elicit neurodevelopmental toxicity in rodents and primates and lead to more exaggerated anxiety-like behavior in response to future stress. Anxiety and fear are closely correlated and maladaptive fear-associated learning is regarded as the core mechanism underlying anxiety-related disorders.

The impact of social defeat on basomedial amygdala neuronal activity in adult male rats

Alexandra C. Ritger a,c, Courtney P. Stickling c, Nicole C. Ferrara b,c,*

doi : 10.1016/j.bbr.2023.114418

Volume 446, 28 May 2023, 114418

Social stressors negatively impact social function, and this is mediated by the amygdala across species. Social defeat stress is an ethologically relevant social stressor in adult male rats that increases social avoidance, anhedonia, and anxiety-like behaviors.
