Globally, over 300 million surgical procedures are performed annually, with pain being one of the most common post-operative side effects. During the onset of injury, acute pain plays a protective role in alerting the individual to remove noxious stimuli, while long-lasting chronic pain without any physiological reason is detrimental to the recovery process.

Social interaction is necessary for the development of individuals and society. Social interaction behaviors are rewarding. Similar to exogenous opioids, social interaction behaviors are able to induce rewarding effects that are regulated by the endogenous opioid system as well.

Electroconvulsive shock (ECT) is the most effective treatment for depression but can impair learning and memory. ECT is increasingly being shown to activate astrocytes and induce neuroinflammation, resulting in cognitive decline.

Depression is associated with intestinal dysbiosis. Venlafaxine is a commonly used antidepressant in clinical practice as a serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor. However, its effects on gut bacteria in depression remain unclear.

Although empathic concern is critical in harm-related moral judgment, the temporal dynamics underlying the impact of empathic concern on moral judgment remain unclear. This study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate how empathic concern induction shaped the way individuals perceive harmful/helpful behaviors.

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is emerging as a crucial sphingolipid modulating neuroinflammation and cognition. S1P levels in the brain have been found to be decreased in cognitive impairment. S1P lyase (S1PL) is the key enzyme in metabolizing S1P and has been implicated in neuroinflammation.

Kratom (M. speciosa Korth) is an herbal plant native to Southeast Asia. The leaves have been widely used to alleviate pain and opioid withdrawal symptoms. However, the increasing trend of recreational use of kratom among youth is concerning because substance abuse may render the adolescent brain more susceptible to neuropathological processes, causing dramatic consequences that persist into adulthood.

Volatile anesthetics elicit neurodevelopmental toxicity in rodents and primates and lead to more exaggerated anxiety-like behavior in response to future stress. Anxiety and fear are closely correlated and maladaptive fear-associated learning is regarded as the core mechanism underlying anxiety-related disorders.

Pain is a public health concern worldwide and can present simultaneously with anxiety and depression. c-Fos is a marker used to identify activated cells in response to various stimuli. Specifically, it can be used as a brain marker of pain.
