Serum, saliva, and gingival tissue human β-defensin levels in relation to retinoic acid use

Nur Atalay, Nur Balci, Hilal Uslu Toygar, Gurkan Yardimci, Ulvi Kahraman Gürsoy

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0466

Retinoic acid is an active derivative of vitamin A and regulates the differentiation, proliferation, and antimicrobial peptide expression profiles of human cells. The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of systemic retinoic acid use on serum, saliva, and gingival tissue levels of human β-defensin (hBD)-1, hBD-2, and hBD-3.

Molecular characteristics of periodontal health: Collagens

Christina Zachariadou, Thomas Hart, Deborah Hooper, Angelo Mariotti

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0415

Defining periodontal health has been an ambitious and complex goal. The numerous and varied definitions of what constitutes periodontal health have resulted in a collection of subjective and unreliable clinical findings to diagnose and classify periodontal health and disease.

Effect of interleukin-17 on periodontitis development: An instrumental variable analysis

Sebastian-Edgar Baumeister, Birte Holtfreter, Stefan Lars Reckelkamm, Daniel Hagenfeld, Thomas Kocher, Zoheir Alayash, Benjamin Ehmke, Hansjörg Baurecht, Michael Nolde

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0365

Circulating levels of interleukin-17 (IL-17) are associated with the presence and severity of periodontitis. However, whether IL-17 is causal for disease development is unknown. We investigated the effect of genetically proxied IL-17 on periodontitis using instrumental variable analysis.

Wound healing after ridge preservation: A randomized controlled trial on short-term (4 months) versus long-term (12 months) histologic outcomes

The amount of time it takes for bone allograft particles to be replaced with new vital bone during ridge preservation is unclear. The purpose of this article was to compare the wound healing and vital bone formation following ridge preservation using a combination allograft of 70% mineralized and 30% demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft at 4 months (short-term, ST) versus 12 months (long-term, LT).

Radiographic and clinical signs of periodontitis and associated bacterial species in a Swedish adolescent population

Mark Lindholm, Rolf Claesson, Hanna Löf, Huei-Min Chiang, Jan Oscarsson, Anders Johansson, Carola Höglund Åberg

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0453

Periodontitis in adolescents has historically been rare in the Nordic countries but could be expected to increase due to changing demographics. The primary aim was to cross-sectionally examine the presence of radiographic bone loss in adolescents in Västerbotten County, Sweden.

Minimally invasive gingival phenotype modification in gingival recession associated with a non-carious cervical lesion using the root plastique technique: A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest study

Luigi Romano, Michele Paolantonio, Paolo De Ninis, Muhammad H. A. Saleh, Bruna Sinjari, Edit Xhajanka, Beatrice Femminella, Hom-lay Wang, Andrea Ravidá

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0414

This study introduces the root plastique technique (RPT), the aim of which is to modify the gingival phenotype of sites with gingival recessions (GRs) associated with non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) prior to surgical treatment.

Comparative histological evaluation of intra- and extraorally de-epithelialized connective tissue graft samples harvested from the posterior palate region

Emilio Couso-Queiruga, Oscar Gonzalez-Martin, Sandra Stuhr, Iñaki Gamborena, Leandro Chambrone, Gustavo Avila-Ortiz

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0493

Autologous connective tissue graft (CTG) is generally considered the gold standard for peri-implant soft tissue phenotype modification and root coverage therapy. The presence of epithelial remnants in CTG has been associated with complications after soft tissue augmentation surgery.

Identification of thin and thick gingival phenotypes by two transparency methods: A diagnostic accuracy study

Fernanda A. da Costa, Jeniffer Perussolo, Debora R. Dias, Maurício G. Araújo

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0488

There is limited information on the diagnostic accuracy of the transparency method to diagnose gingival phenotypes taking into consideration not only the gingival thickness (GT) but also the keratinized tissue width (KTW).

Resolvin D1 modulates periodontal ligament fibroblast function

Ahmed E. Zarrough, Hatice Hasturk, Danielle N. Stephens, Thomas E. Van Dyke, Alpdogan Kantarci

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0462

The resolution of inflammation is an active process mediated by specialized lipid mediators called lipoxins and resolvins. Periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLFs) play a significant role in periodontal regeneration. The purpose of the current study was to determine the impact of resolvin D1 (RvD1) on human PDLF cell wound healing and proliferation, receptor expression (G-protein-coupled receptor 32 [GPR32] and formyl peptide receptor 2 [ALX/FPR2]), and cytokine expression and release.
