Microneedle-mediated treatment for superficial tumors by combining multiple strategies

Meng Wang, Xiaodan Li, Wenzhen Du, Minge Sun, Guixia Ling & Peng Zhang

doi : 10.1007/s13346-023-01297-9

Superficial tumors are still challenging to overcome due to the high risk and toxicity of surgery and conventional chemotherapy. Microneedles (MNs) are widely used in the treatment of superficial skin tumors (SST) due to the high penetration rate of the stratum corneum (SC), excellent biocompatibility, simple preparation process, high patient compliance, and minimal invasion.

Nanomedicine in therapeutic warfront against estrogen receptor–positive breast cancer

Mayur Aalhate, Srushti Mahajan, Hoshiyar Singh, Santosh Kumar Guru & Pankaj Kumar Singh

doi : 10.1007/s13346-023-01299-7

Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy in women worldwide. Almost 70–80% of cases of BC are curable at the early non-metastatic stage. BC is a heterogeneous disease with different molecular subtypes. Around 70% of breast tumors exhibit estrogen-receptor (ER) expression and endocrine therapy is used for the treatment of these patients.

Studies on spray dried topical ophthalmic emulsions containing cyclosporin A (0.05% w/w): systematic optimization, in vitro preclinical toxicity and in vivo assessments

Syed Nazrin Ruhina Rahman, Neha Agarwal, Abhinab Goswami, Amoolya Sree, Aishwarya Jala, Animith Venuganti, Apurba Deka, Roshan M. Borkar, Vivek Singh, Dipankar Das & Tamilvanan Shunmugaperumal

doi : 10.1007/s13346-022-01271-x

Cyclosporin A (CsA, 0.05% w/w)–loaded positively charged emulsions were prepared based on castor oil, chitosan, poloxamer 188, glycerin and double-distilled water. To augment the shelf/storage-stability of original emulsions, the solid-dry powder for reconstitution was made by spray drying technique.

Liposome-polyethylenimine complexes for the effective delivery of HuR siRNA in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy

Shibani Supe, Archana Upadhya, Santosh Tripathi, Vikas Dighe & Kavita Singh

doi : 10.1007/s13346-022-01281-9

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a vision-impairing complication of diabetes, damaging the retinal microcirculatory system. Overexpression of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) is implicated in the pathogenesis of DR. Human antigen R (HuR) is an RNA-binding protein that favorably regulates VEGF protein expression by binding to VEGF-encoding mRNA.

Functionalized zein nanoparticles targeting neonatal Fc receptor to enhance lung absorption of peptides

Fatima Hameedat, Soraia Pinto, Joana Marques, Sofia Dias & Bruno Sarmento

doi : 10.1007/s13346-022-01286-4

Peptides have a distinguished therapeutic potential for several chronic conditions, and more than 80 peptides exist in the global market. However, most of these marketed peptide drugs are currently delivered intravenously or subcutaneously due to their fast degradation and limited absorption through non-invasive routes.

Inulin-lipid hybrid (ILH) microparticles promote pH-triggered release of rifampicin within infected macrophages

Sajedeh Maghrebi, Nicky Thomas, Clive A. Prestidge & Paul Joyce

doi : 10.1007/s13346-022-01287-3

Intracellular bacteria serve as a problematic source of infection due to their ability to evade biological immune responses and the inability for conventional antibiotics to efficiently penetrate cellular membranes. Subsequently, new treatment approaches are urgently required to effectively eradicate intracellular pathogens residing within immune cells (e.g. macrophages).

Development of hyaluronic acid–anchored polycaprolactone nanoparticles for efficient delivery of PLK1 siRNA to breast cancer

Dolly Jain & Awesh K. Yadav

doi : 10.1007/s13346-022-01288-2

PlK1 has a significant role in the development of breast cancer. Thus, silencing of PlK1 gene may arrest the growth of breast cancer. However, the in vivo stability of PlK1 siRNA after injection remains a challenge to target the specific site. The delivery of siPlK1 RNA via viral vector and amine group–terminated dendrimer is associated with immune reaction and cellular cytotoxicity.

Sleeping Beauty transposon system for GDNF overexpression of entrapped stem cells in fibrin hydrogel in a rat model of Parkinson’s disease

Laura Stahn, Justyna Rasińska, Tilo Dehne, Stefanie Schreyer, Aileen Hakus, Manfred Gossen, Barbara Steiner & Shabnam Hemmati-Sadeghi

doi : 10.1007/s13346-023-01289-9

There is currently no causal treatment available for Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, the use of glial cell line–derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) to provide regenerative effects for neurons is promising. Such approaches require translational delivery systems that are functional in diseased tissue.
