This article reviewed recent advances in the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Special focus is put on the phenotypic heterogeneity of DKD, and the recent studies that showed the therapeutic benefits of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP?1 receptor agonists. Potential future therapeutic strategies are also explored.

This article describes the application of ecological studies to provide an answer to specific epidemiological questions. This paper focuses on the problem of ecological fallacy, a bias which occurs when conclusions about a given relationship in individuals are deduced from inferences about the group to which those individuals belong.

This is a retrospective cohort study on 94 patients followed for up to 6 months in Japan showing that worsening of kidney function after acute myocardial infarction (MI) is associated with peak oxygen uptake on exercise test, and this association is independent of baseline kidney function. Thus a decline is kidney function post MI may have implications for worse outcomes than the absolute level of kidney function.

This observational single?center study assessed the frequency and predictors of acute kidney injury in 348 hospitalized patients with COVID?19. In this cohort, AKI was diagnosed in 4.9% of patients and proteinuria (spot urine analysis) in 20%. A population cohort study of live donors registered in the Korean Organ Transplant Registry showing that over 1 in 5 live?donors developed chronic kidney disease at 2?years post?donation, and had exhibited decline in eGFR over time. The authors also showed that higher systolic blood pressure was associated with the development of chronic kidney disease suggesting that close long?term follow?up of these donors are required.

This study has explored the mechanism underlying cardiorenal syndrome type 4 by studying a rat model of 5/6 subtotal nephrectomy. In this model, the Wnt/??catenin pathway was found to induce cardiac hypertrophy and blockade of this pathway led to renoprotection and reversal of cardiac injury.
