Evaluation of goiter in adults without obstructive symptoms
TSH: thyroid-stimulating hormone; T4: thyroxine; T3: triiodothyronine; TPO: thyroid peroxidase; TRAb: TSH-receptor antibodies. * Non-autonomous focal areas of possible nodularity on thyroid scan (or exam) should be evaluated with ultrasound. ¶ We do not routinely obtain a thyroid ultrasound in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Ultrasound should be reserved for such patients with larger goiters, thyroid asymmetry, or a concern for thyroid nodularity.
