Adverse Reactions

The following adverse drug reactions and incidences are derived from product labeling unless otherwise specified.

Frequency not defined: Ophthalmic: Ocular discoloration (inadvertent staining of posterior lens and vitreous face; staining may last up to 1 week)

Contraindications

Use when a nonhydrated (dry state), hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) insertion is planned (potential for the dye to be absorbed by and stain the IOL)

Warnings/Precautions

Other warnings/precautions:

• Administration: MembraneBlue: Prime the syringe by retracting plunger or twist plunger with a clockwise motion before injection; ensure the syringe plunger moves smoothly prior to use.

• Appropriate use: Remove excess dye after use to prevent excessive staining.

Solution Prefilled Syringe, Intraocular:

Vision Blue: 0.06% (0.5 mL)

Administration: Adult

Ophthalmic: Topical:

0.06% solution (VisionBlue): To minimize dilution of the dye (trypan blue) by the aqueous, an air bubble should be injected into the anterior chamber of the eye after opening the eye, but prior to application of trypan blue. Irrigate with balanced salt solution to remove excess dye.

0.15% solution (MembraneBlue): Ensure that the plunger moves smoothly before use. Prime the syringe prior to injecting the fluid. Alternatively, twist the plunger into the stopper in a clockwise motion until tight. Once tight, continue turning the plunger in a clockwise motion until the stopper rotates freely in the syringe (2 or 3 rotations). If applying to epiretinal membranes, must perform a fluid-air exchange prior to injection of trypan blue to prevent aqueous dilution of the dye; immediately remove all excess dye following injection. If injecting directly into a balanced salt solution filled-vitreous cavity, wait 30 seconds following injection (sufficient staining is achieved after 30 seconds), then remove all excess dye.

Use: Labeled Indications

Surgical aid (ophthalmic):

0.06% solution (VisionBlue): Stains the anterior capsule of the lens in cataract surgery.

0.15% solution (MembraneBlue): Stains the epiretinal membranes, facilitating removal of the tissue during vitrectomy procedures.

Medication Safety Issues
Sound-alike/look-alike issues:

VisionBlue may be confused with methylene blue

Pregnancy Considerations

Adverse events were observed in animal reproduction studies.

Systemic exposure is negligible following ophthalmic use as recommended.

Breastfeeding Considerations

It is not known if trypan blue is present in breast milk.

Systemic exposure is negligible following ophthalmic use as recommended.

Mechanism of Action

An acid di-azo group dye that selectively stains connective tissue structures and epiretinal membranes in the human eye, facilitating visualization during ophthalmic surgery.
