Applies to patients with spontaneous onset of symptoms, including those with symptoms after minor trauma. (Diagnosis of post-dural puncture headache is made clinically when symptoms begin immediately following dural puncture; such patients do not typically require diagnostic evaluation. Refer to the UpToDate topic on the evaluation and management of post-dural puncture headache for additional details.)

MRI: magnetic resonance imaging; CSF: cerebrospinal fluid; MR: magnetic resonance.

* MRI is performed without contrast for patients with a contraindication to gadolinium.
