Variations in hepatic artery, portal vein, and bile duct positions

The right hepatic artery generally passes posteriorly (panel A), but occasionally passes anteriorly to the bile duct just above the cystic duct insertion (panel F), and is susceptible to injury.

SMA: superior mesenteric artery.
