Radioactive iodine uptake in thyroid bed after total thyroidectomy

Radioactive iodine uptake in thyroid bed after total thyroidectomy
Total thyroidectomy seldom results in removal of all thyroid tissue. Post RAI ablation scanning with SPECT/CT most commonly localized the specific uptake areas within the thyroid bed in the regions of Berry's ligament, lobar region, pyramidal lobe, and superior poles. Although this uptake probably represents residual normal thyroid tissue, in some cases the uptake could also be caused by persistent thyroid cancer in the thyroid bed.
RAI: radioactive iodine; SPECT: single-photon emission computed tomography; CT: computed tomography.
