Human trafficking: Warning signs
Warning signs of human trafficking
  • Delayed presentation for medical care
  • Sudden or dramatic change in behavior (eg, a minor stops attending school)
  • Discrepancy between the stated history and the clinical presentation or observed pattern of injury
  • Scripted, memorized, or mechanically recited history
  • Stated age older than visual appearance
  • Lack of documentation or identification (eg, driver's license, passport) or documents in possession of accompanying individual(s)
  • Reluctance to speak on own behalf or presence of accompanying individual(s) who answers for patient
  • Fearful, suspicious, or distrustful demeanor
  • Inappropriate attire for a visit (ie, lingerie)
  • Signs of malnourishment, substance abuse, or poor dental hygiene
  • Signs the person is being controlled by someone who is accompanying him/her to the visit (eg, companion who refuses to leave)
  • Signs the person does not have freedom to exit a job or relocate
  • Frequent relocation or lack of knowledge of surroundings (victims may be moved frequently to avoid detection)
  • Evidence of isolation from the public or from religious/ethnic community
Warning signs of sex trafficking
  • All genders:
  • Multiple sexual partners
  • Multiple sexually transmitted infections
  • For postpubertal girls and women:
  • Multiple pregnancies
  • Multiple miscarriages
  • Multiple terminations
