Initial evaluation of the adult with suspected cervical radiculopathy

Initial evaluation of the adult with suspected cervical radiculopathy
Cervical radiculopathy is a clinical condition that consists of neck, shoulder, and/or arm pain often accompanied by weakness and/or numbness. The diagnosis is typically made clinically in patients with compatible history and examination findings. Neuroimaging and/or neurodiagnostic testing is performed for patients with atypical features to exclude alternative conditions and for those with severe symptoms who may warrant surgical treatment for compressive or other structural causes.

CT: computed tomography; HIV: human immunodeficiency virus; MRI: magnetic resonance imaging; NSAIDs: nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs.

* Conservative therapy may involve pharmacotherapy with NSAIDs or glucocorticoids, short-term neck immobilization, or physical therapy. Refer to UpToDate content for additional treatment details.

¶ Neurodiagnostic testing typically includes nerve conduction studies and electromyography. Testing is typically performed when symptoms have been present for ≥3 weeks to minimize the risk of false negative results.
