The lower gestational age limit of preterm birth is 20+0 weeks of gestation. A birth <20+0 weeks of gestation is called a pregnancy loss, miscarriage, or spontaneous abortion in the United States. Preterm births are described by gestational age, birth weight, and initiating factor (eg, spontaneous preterm birth versus medically indicated preterm birth).
