Cardioplegic solution must be buffered with sodium bicarbonate 8.4% for pH adjustment prior to cardiac instillation. To achieve an approximate pH of 7.8, 10 mL of sodium bicarbonate 8.4% must be added aseptically and thoroughly mixed with each 1,000 mL of cardioplegic solution. Not for intravenous injection; for cardiac instillation only.
Cardiac arrest induction: When appropriately buffered, solution is used to induce cardiac arrest during open heart surgery, in combination with ischemia and hypothermia.
