Approach to patient with post-traumatic vertigo

Approach to patient with post-traumatic vertigo
This flow chart identifies most common mechanisms of vertigo in the setting of recent TBI. Note that clinical syndromes may be less distinct if more than one mechanism is involved in any given patient. The vertigo syndrome may also be unrelated to trauma, and thus a broader differential should be considered. Refer to UpToDate content on the evaluation of patients with vertigo.
ENT: ear, nose, and throat; MRI: magnetic resonance imaging; BPPV: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo; EEG: electroencephalography; TBI: traumatic brain injury.
* Vestibular migraine is relatively common: accompanying symptoms are not required for diagnosis.
¶ Epileptic vertigo is rare.
