Reconstruction of thumb amputation

Reconstruction of thumb amputation
The patient suffered a traumatic right thumb amputation by convolution to a rope. The amputated thumb was lost. A revision of the traumatic amputation site was conducted at an outside hospital (A). The proximal phalanx bone and the metacarpophalangeal joint were retained. The patient was referred for reconstruction. A new thumb was created by transferring the second left toe from the foot (B, C) to the hand (D). Six years after the reconstruction, the patient had good range of motion with reasonable extension (E) and good flexion (F) of the thumb.
