Bowel transection

Bowel transection
When a stapler is not used to divide the bowel, noncrushing bowel clamps are placed on both sides of the pathologic area and oriented slightly oblique to the bowel, favoring the antimesenteric edge. The bowel is then transected sharply with a scalpel. The ends of the specimen are usually also controlled with bowel clamps before transection to prevent spillage of enteric contents.
