Chest radiograph and CT mild pulmonary contusion

Chest radiograph and CT mild pulmonary contusion
(Panel A) Mild pulmonary contusion limited to the right mid-lung area (thick arrows). Only in the center of the contusion is a smaller, discrete area of focal consolidation seen (arrows). This could represent an area of more severe contusion or a hematoma.
(Panel B) The peripheral location of the pulmonary contusion is revealed by CT (arrowheads). In addition, CT shows that the area of increased density thought to be a focal hematoma on the PA CXR is actually a focal area of atelectasis (dashed arrows) posterior to the contusion. CT also shows a focal contusion in the left lung (arrows) not recorded on the CXR.
CT: computed tomography; CXR: chest x-ray (plain radiograph); PA: posteroanterior
