Medication abortion
Medication abortion is a way to have an abortion using medicines, in the form of pills. Some people say it is similar to having a miscarriage. At your clinic visit, you will swallow one pill of a medicine called mifepristone. This medicine blocks a hormone (progesterone) that is needed for a pregnancy to continue. The following day, you will place a second medicine called misoprostol either in your vagina or in your mouth between your cheek and gums. This medicine causes you to pass the pregnancy.
First trimester aspiration abortion (dilation and evacuation)

Your provider will numb your cervix, which is the opening of your uterus, with some medication. It is an injection around the cervix, where it will help numb the area and reduce sensation.

Your provider may need to open your cervix using some smooth metal wands called dilators. They are tapered, so they enter the cervix easily. Your provider may use a few dilators to gently stretch open the cervical opening so a tube the size of a straw can be passed through.

Your provider will use a tube, called a cannula, to empty your uterus. The straw goes through the opening in the cervix and into the uterus. Your clinician will use suction to empty your uterus.
Expectations for pain for medication or aspiration abortion
It is common for patients to report feeling pressure and different levels of cramps like menstrual cramps. Some people describe mild or moderate cramping and others describe a strong cramping pain, especially when the uterus is almost empty.
Aspiration abortion with osmotic dilator preparation

The purpose of your visit today is to place dilators [show a sample to the patient] into your cervix. The cervix is the opening of your uterus. Overnight, the dilators will absorb moisture from your body, and they will swell and expand. As they swell, they push open the cervix. The goal is to have your cervix open 2 cm. The dilators do the work to open your cervix slowly, which is safe for your body.

Some patients say that mostly they experienced a sensation of pressure. Others describe an experience of cramping pain, but it was mild or moderate. A few patients say that they experience strong, painful cramping as the dilators are inserted. The pain starts to ease up as soon as the dilators are in place.

We remove the pregnancy through this natural opening using a tube called a cannula and sometimes an instrument called a forceps. A forceps is anything that can hold something.
