Apical four chamber view with color flow Doppler in diastole

Apical four chamber view with color flow Doppler in diastole
Shown is the apical four chamber view with color Doppler imaging in diastole. Panel A demonstrates mitral inflow color Doppler in a normal subject. There is physiologic flow that is directed towards the transducer and extends from the pulmonary veins to the LV. This color signal is used to position pulsed wave Doppler sample volumes so that quantifiable flow signal can be obtained from the pulmonary veins. Panel B demonstrates diastolic mitral inflow color Doppler imaging in a patient with mitral stenosis, in whom turbulent diastolic inflow is seen in the LV.
LA: left atrium; LV: left ventricle; RA: right atrium; RV: right ventricle.
