US-guided injection of iliotibial band

US-guided injection of iliotibial band
(A) The photographs shows the correct set up for a sonographically guided injection of the right iliotibial band (ITB). The needle moves in the same plane as the transducer, and in the short axis relative to the ITB. The proximal lower extremity is seen in the upper left part of the image, while the anterior is seen to the right.
(B) This ultrasound image shows a transverse view of a posterior-to-anterior injection. The needle moves in the plane of the transducer, between the ITB and the lateral femoral epicondyle (LFE). Note the fluid (asterisk) deep to the ITB.
(C) This ultrasound image shows a coronal/longitudinal view of a posterior-to-anterior injection. The needle moves out of the plane with the transducer, but the tip can be seen between the ITB and LFE (arrows denote needle tip). The popliteus is visualized on the distal, posterolateral femur.
US: ultrasound; ITB: iliotibial band; LFE: lateral femoral epicondyle; LG (image B): lateral gastrocnemius; LG (image C): longitudinal view; POP: popliteus; TR: transverse view.
