Ultrasound of scaphoid bone

Ultrasound of scaphoid bone
The images above show the position of the transducer to perform an ultrasound examination of the scaphoid and the corresponding images obtained. The ultrasound images show normal findings for the scaphoid. The probe indicator is oriented towards the patient's head in all images. Arrowheads indicate the cortex of the distal radius, whereas arrows indicate the scaphoid cortex.
(A) Longitudinal position of the transducer over the lateral wrist. The wrist is placed in as much ulnar deviation as the patient can tolerate comfortably.
(B) Normal ultrasound findings corresponding to the probe position in image A. Note the absence of soft tissue effusion around the scaphoid.
(C) Palmar position of the transducer; wrist in ulnar deviation.
(D) Normal ultrasound findings corresponding to the probe position in image C.
(E) Dorsal position of the transducer; wrist in neutral position.
(F) Normal ultrasound findings corresponding to the probe position in image E.
