Clinical applications for endovaginal ultrasound of the pelvic floor

Components of EVUS

2D scanning with Valsalva to assess for cystocele, rectocele, uterine prolapse, sling and mesh movement using a curvilinear probe

2D scanning of the anterior compartment to assess for anterior vaginal cysts and masses, sling, and mesh

2D scanning of the posterior compartment to assess for posterior vaginal cysts and masses, mesh, and intussusception

3D scanning with NO pelvic floor contraction to assess for levator ani avulsion or the levator ani deficiency

If the anal sphincter does not appear intact and the patient is symptomatic, proceed with EAUS

EVUS: endovaginal ultrasound; 2D: 2-dimensional; 3D: 3-dimensional; EAUS: endoanal ultrasound.
