Platelet sequestration and consumption in placenta

Platelet sequestration and consumption in placenta
Placental morphology and immunohistochemical staining show areas of platelet consumption in normal placenta. These sections were obtained at the time of delivery.
(A) Low-magnification view, hematoxylin and eosin staining, mature terminal villi. Thick arrows point to regions of perivillous fibrinoid.
(B) Section adjacent to that in (A) stained with an antibody to platelet membrane glycoprotein IIIa (anti-CD61, brown color). Thin arrows point to platelets in a linear pattern within the perivillous fibrinoid.
(C) Higher magnification showing a mature terminal villus. Dashed arrow indicates perivillous fibrinoid sealing a gap in the syncytiotrophoblast surface.
(D) Section adjacent to that in (C) stained with an antibody to show platelets. Arrowhead points to platelets within the perivillous fibrinoid.
