* Concentrations of chemotherapy agents in the peritoneal cavity and the plasma are typically described by the AUC created by plotting the drug concentration over time. The ratio of the peritoneal to plasma AUC is a measure of the degree to which a drug is absorbed. A high AUC ratio is desirable in order to maximize cytotoxicity, while minimizing systemic toxicity. However, a high AUC ratio is only one factor that enters into the choice of intraperitoneal chemotherapy agent, along with efficacy of the drug for the tumor type.
