Lateral venous ulcer

Lateral venous ulcer
The patient developed a venous ulceration over the lateral aspect of the left lower extremity. While venous ulceration overlying the medial malleolus is the more typical location related to venous insufficiency in the great saphenous vein, venous ulceration can occur in the lateral leg related to insufficiency of the small saphenous vein. Wound healing progressed somewhat in response to compression therapy, but allografting was required and led to closure of the proximal wound. For patients with chronic venous insufficiency and refractory ulceration, superficial venous ablation may be an option.
