Bone transport lower extremity

Bone transport lower extremity
The concept of bone transport is illustrated for the lower extremity. In this case, a tibial bone defect will be filled by progressively moving the proximal healthy tibia distally. This is accomplished by first transecting (ie, osteotomy) the proximal tibia (A). The separated tibia is gradually transported distally into the defect (B). During the process of the transportation, bone callus is formed at the proximal osteotomy site. The process is completed when the transported bone is docked to the distal tibial fragment; the gap is filled with bone callus (C).
