These images show a blood smear from a 55 year old admitted to the intensive care unit with severe COVID-19. The arrows point to examples of mushroom-shaped RBCs, also called pincer cells. In a series of 50 patients with COVID-19, 33 (66%) had mushroom-shaped RBCs on the blood smear, and all 50 had abnormal RBC morphologies.
