HAV: hepatitis A virus; HBV: hepatitis B virus. * Cholestasis is defined as alkaline phosphatase ≥2 times the upper limit of normal. ¶ Examples of drugs that are associated with drug-induced liver injury (DILI) include amoxicillin-clavulanate, other penicillins, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents, and antifungal agents. Δ Liver biochemical tests include alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase. ◊ Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is initiated at a total daily dose of 13 to 15 mg/kg orally and is usually administered twice daily. § When cholestasis has resolved, UDCA is gradually tapered over two to three months. After UDCA is discontinued, liver biochemical tests are monitored for an additional three to six months. ¥ Refer to UpToDate content on patient selection for liver transplantation.
