Chemical structure of the thrombopoietin receptor agonist avatrombopag
TPO-RAs work by activating the thrombopoietin receptor on platelets and megakaryocytes (and, at a lesser density, on most other hematopoietic precursor cells), leading to the production of new platelets. Avatrombopag is one of the orally available, non-peptide TPO-RAs. It has no food interactions, does not alter liver function, and does not require dose adjustment in people of East Asian ancestry or those with impaired liver function. Refer to UpToDate for details of its clinical use.
