Different positions for breastfeeding

All breastfeeding positions have the following in common:

(A, B, and C) Infant and mother are comfortable, and the infant is positioned so that:

  • Abdomen is tucked flat against the mother
  • Body and head are in alignment (head not turned)
  • Head is tilted up and away from the chest, such that the infant is "reaching up" to the breast

(D) Infant latches on with chin buried in the breast, and the nose is free. More of the areola should be visible above the infant's mouth than below the mouth.

After each feeding, the infant should be placed back in their crib, bassinet, or other safe place, rather than sleeping in a bed with an adult. If the mother thinks that she might fall asleep while breastfeeding, she should check that the surroundings are safe for the infant (firm surface with no pillows or blankets that could cover the infant's head).
