  • Simple (Bosniak I) cyst
  • Minimally complex cyst (Bosniak II)
  • Pseudotumor
  • Complex cysts (Bosniak IIF, III, or IV)
  • Solid contrast-enhancing massΔ
  • Vascular malformations
  • Angiomyolipoma
  • Indeterminate lesions
  • Kidney masses formed from focal infection

* Follow-up can be in the form of additional imaging, procedure, or other definitive management.

¶ A pseudotumor is a lesion that can have the appearance of a tumor on ultrasound but can be characterized as a non-tumor structure (eg, column of Bertin, persistent fetal lobulation) by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Once characterized, pseudotumors do not need additional follow-up.

Δ Solid contrast-enhancing masses need follow-up because some of these can be renal cell carcinomas. Other benign lesions, such as fat-poor angiomyolipoma and oncocytoma, can also have a similar appearance.

◊ Indeterminate lesions include those that are not definitively benign on imaging.
