Determining the cause of a water diuresis in nonpregnant adults and adolescents with polyuria and normal serum sodium using water restriction and desmopressin

Determining the cause of a water diuresis in nonpregnant adults and adolescents with polyuria and normal serum sodium using water restriction and desmopressin
As the safety of water restriction has not been established in pregnancy, this algorithm is not intended for use in pregnant patients.

ADH: antidiuretic hormone; AVP-D: arginine vasopressin deficiency (previously called central diabetes insipidus); AVP-R: arginine vasopressin resistance (previously called nephrogenic diabetes insipidus); IV: intravenously.

* If primary polydipsia is strongly suspected, then aqueous vasopressin (10 units intramuscularly or subcutaneously) should be given instead of desmopressin.
