Anatomy of the thoracic paravertebral space
In this graphic the thoracic paravertebral space is outlined with a dashed line and is shaded green, on both sides of the vertebrae between the heads and necks of the ribs, and extending slightly lateral to the transverse processes. The boundaries of the TPVS are as follows:
  • Anterior – Parietal pleura
  • Medial – Posterolateral vertebral body, the vertebral disc, and the vertebral foramen and spinal nerve
  • Posterior – The SCTL
  • Lateral – The posterior intercostal membrane and the intercostal space
  • Superior/inferior – The heads and necks of the ribs
ICM: intercostal muscle; IM: intercostal membrane; SCTL: superior costotransverse ligament; TPVS: thoracic paravertebral space.
