This graphic shows the scalpel-bougie-tube technique for cricothyrotomy, as follows:
(A) Identify the cricothyroid membrane.
(B) Make a stab incision through the cricothyroid membrane with the scalpel blade perpendicular to the axis of the trachea.
(C) With the blade still in the incision, rotate the blade 90 degrees to turn the sharp edge caudally.
(D) Insert the bougie through the incision into the trachea along the scalpel blade.
(E) Remove the scalpel and insert the endotracheal tube over the bougie into the trachea. Inflate the endotracheal tube cuff and remove the bougie.
