Scalpel-bougie-tube technique for cricothyrotomy

This graphic shows the scalpel-bougie-tube technique for cricothyrotomy, as follows:

• (A) Identify the cricothyroid membrane.

• (B) Make a stab incision through the cricothyroid membrane with the scalpel blade perpendicular to the axis of the trachea.

• (C) With the blade still in the incision, rotate the blade 90 degrees to turn the sharp edge caudally.

• (D) Insert the bougie through the incision into the trachea along the scalpel blade.

• (E) Remove the scalpel and insert the endotracheal tube over the bougie into the trachea. Inflate the endotracheal tube cuff and remove the bougie.
