Backhoe chest wound requiring lung resection

(A) Right chest wall defect caused by backhoe loader/excavator crush injury.
(B) The chest wall musculature and ribs were extensively damaged, including nonviable muscle and devascularized rib, which were resected. The lung was exposed to the open wound.
(C) The right upper lobe of the lung was irreversibly crushed and was resected. A damage control dressing was placed, and the patient was returned to the operating room in 24 hours to assess final viability of the remaining musculature.
